Show me your badge! 📛

I like when things are easy. Sometimes things are not easy, but it's always good for teachers to remember that feeling of awkwardness and having to work hard at something so that we can be more empathetic educators. Many of these assignments pushed me outside of my comfort zone but I feel like I grew and worked through that feeling of using my left hand as a natural rightie!
Gradeless teaching was eye-opening as was Kathy Schrock's massive collection of rubrics, but the assignment of Creating a Digital Badge and Digital Badge Pathway in Module 4 was my favorite. I found this to be very practical and something I will use in my classroom next year. I aligned the assignment to the RACE writing strategy that we use in 5th grade. Since I already do this in my classroom, I felt this was where technology can enhance what I am already doing. It was very fun to design the badge and I will be excited to create more to help build a digital pathway to mastery! This digital pathway is very logical to me and I think will help students visualize expectations and plan, prepare and pace themselves accordingly. There were many great learning moments, this one just really stuck with me!

  1. Julie,
I think that your students will really benefit from this plan and will love earning that badge! The digital badge pathway is very clear and concise and will be meaningful to students!

  2. Creating a digital badge pathway for your students to follow will enhance what you are doing in the classroom. I agree that digital badging aligns to what teachers are already doing in their classroom. It simply outlines tasks clearly for students and creates motivation to move along the pathway at a pace appropriate for each student to reach mastery learning for that concept. What format will you use to distribute digital badges to students?

    1. Lorene - I was thinking that a google doc would be the best format. I like the example of the grayed out badges and then they become colorful when you've earned it! Then a class poster maybe to hang on a bulletin board for progress.

  3. The digital badge was a great exercise to do. The massive collection of rubrics was also eye opening for me. I had no idea that sort of thing existed. I also really enjoyed the discussion and reflection on gradeless teaching. It was a very thought provoking exercise.

  4. Julie I could not agree more that this course was uncomfortable and difficult for me but it pushed me to do things that I would not have normally do. I love the badges! I definitely have to incorporate them into my teaching next year!

  5. Julie, I love that you used the digital badge for the R.A.C.E. strategy! Very clever and such a fun way to make it more engaging and motivating for your students. I can't wait to hear how you like using the digital badges in your classroom.

  6. Julie,

The digital badges were my favorite, too! I really think the students would love to see a badge of honor for various skills they have mastered! It would be great to see those badges in their digital .portfolios as well! It reaffirms their purpose of understanding what and why they're learning what they're learning!
